Here are notes from a YouTube video I watched about studying the Bible by Keith Ferrin.
I'll share the link in different post.
Who is Keith Ferrin?
A Bible Coach with a background in psychology and brain science, not theology or pastoral studies.
He grew up in church and now helps people understand and enjoy the Bible using brain science.
The Science Behind Bible Engagement:
Our brains take about 10 minutes to enter storytelling mode, where we visualize and fully engage with what we read.
Most people never reach this 10-minute threshold when reading Scripture, which makes it harder to enjoy and understand.
3 Common Bible Reading Methods & Their Timeframes
Devotional Books→ Only 30-90 seconds of actual Scripture.
Chapter-a-Day → Takes about 3-4.5 minutes to read.
Bible-in-a-Year → About 11-12 minutes per day.
^^^ Most of us aren’t reading long enough to fully engage.
Why This Matters:
If we don’t read long enough, we unintentionally train our brains NOT to enjoy or understand the Bible.
We should read the Bible in context, not just in isolated pieces.Think of it like a movie—if you study a single screenshot before watching the film, it won’t make sense. But if you watch the full movie first, the screenshot has meaning!
2 Brain Hacks for Enjoying the Bible:
1.Read for More Than 10 Minutes
-Give your brain time to fully engage in storytelling mode.
2.Read Out Loud (With Emotion!)
-Helps your brain see and hear, increasing retention dramatically.
-Studies show that combining reading + hearing helps us remember almost double the information.
